Wheaton Home Remodeling
Design First Builders is a design-build custom home remodeling company
Wheaton homeowners can hand their remodel to a single team. Design First Builders is a design-build company, so the people who design your project are the same people who build it, from the first conversation to the final walkthrough. Our office and showroom are at 1201 Norwood Avenue in Itasca, and we’ve been remodeling across Chicagoland since 2006.
What should Wheaton homeowners know before remodeling?
Wheaton is one of DuPage County’s oldest communities. According to the City of Wheaton, Erastus Gary, Jesse Wheaton, and Warren Wheaton claimed land here in 1837 and 1838. The community incorporated as a village on February 24, 1859, and as a city on April 24, 1890. In 1867, a county referendum moved the DuPage County seat to Wheaton, 1,686 votes to 1,635.
A community with roots that deep tends to have homes from several eras on the same street. That is why we look at what’s behind the walls of your house before we settle on finishes. Our guide, Remodeling an Older Home: What to Know Before You Start, explains what to check first.
What are Wheaton homeowners usually trying to fix?
These are the goals we hear most:
- A kitchen with more storage, more light, or a layout that suits the way you cook
- A bathroom that feels cramped or dated
- A basement that could be a second living area
- More bedrooms or a larger main floor, without leaving your street

How does design-build help a Wheaton project?
Under design-build, your designer and builder are the same company. Questions about cost and construction come up while the drawings are still being made, which keeps surprises down later. Read Design-Build vs General Contractor in Chicagoland.

How long does a Wheaton remodel take?
Your project manager confirms the timeline once the design is final. Plan on about 8–12 weeks for a kitchen, 8–12 for a primary bathroom, 4–6 for a guest bathroom, and 4–6 months for an addition. See How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Take in Chicago? for more on bathrooms.
What does a Wheaton remodel cost?
No single number fits every home. Across the Chicago area, our full design-build kitchens often average $100,000–$120,000, which is an average, not a quote. Room size, layout changes, cabinets, finishes, and what turns up behind older walls can move it. Prices can also change if scope or selections change or if material costs move. We prepare an itemized estimate once your design and scope are final. See Kitchen Remodel Cost in Chicago (2026).
